DIAGNOdent™

Traditional methods of cavity detection such as visual screenings and X-rays often miss cavities under the surface of the tooth

The DIAGNOdent™ system by KaVo uses laser fluorescence to detect cavities inside of the tooth at their earliest stages

Does the DIAGNOdent really work?

DIAGNOdent is Quick, Reliable, and Safe

Advanced Technology

DIAGNOdent technology is more precise than traditional methods of cavity detection. According to a study by the Unit of Prosthodontics, University of Manchester, the DIAGNOdent was more accurate at detecting cavities than visual or radiographic methods.

Simple, Reliable Exam

Because it uses harmless laser technology, your exam is painless and quick. By delivering accurate readings, the DIAGNOdent allows your dentist to detect cavities that are not visible to the naked eye.

Opportunity for Early Intervention

The DIAGNOdent system allows your dentist to identify cavities in their earliest stages, when they are the most treatable without expensive or invasive intervention

What is DIAGNOdent?

The DIAGNOdent device consists of a wand and a monitor. The wand delivers harmless laser energy to the tooth, which the monitor translates into readings. The higher the reading, the greater the level of present tooth decay

The readings are generally interpreted as:

  • 10 to 15: No cavity detected
  • 15 to 30: Preventive care recommended
  • 30 and up: Treatment recommended

Cavity Detection Is a Quick Part of Your Dental Check-Up

Exam

Your dentist will run the pen over each tooth, identifying teeth that emit fluorescence and higher readings.

Recommendations

Using the readings from the DIAGNOdent monitor, your dentist can explain which teeth are at risk and which should be treated right away.

Treatment

Your dentist will administer the agreed-upon treatment. If your cavity is treated early on, this will typically consist of a simple dental filling.

Education

For early-stage cavities, your dentist may administer fluoride and provide information on how to keep your case from becoming a full-blown cavity.

DIAGNOdent Helps Detect Underlying Cavities

According to an article by Dentistry IQ, only 80 percent of cavities are visible on the biting surface of the tooth, meaning the remaining percentage are often left undetected and untreated.

When left untreated, dental decay continues to spread. The longer a pocket of decay or cavity is allowed to exist, the greater the chance of serious oral health concerns. When decay reaches the underlying structures of the tooth, you may need a root canal or worse, an extraction. By choosing a dentist who utilizes the advanced DIAGNOdent technology, you can increase the chances of early detection and stop decay from causing serious issues.
